An FTA audit notice or an unexpected penalty can be stressful. We prepare the documents the auditor asks for, help you answer questions clearly and keep the review focused. If you disagree with an assessment or penalty, we prepare a reasoned reconsideration request within the 40-business-day window and, where needed, support an objection to the Tax Disputes Resolution Committee.

In-depth guide

01Preparing for an FTA audit

Auditors typically ask for ledgers, returns, tax invoices, contracts, customs records and bank statements, often for several years. Pulling these together under time pressure is where most businesses struggle.

We build an audit file in advance: reconciliations, document indexes and explanations of unusual items, so you can respond quickly and consistently.

02During the audit

We help you understand each request, prepare accurate responses and avoid volunteering confusing or incomplete information.

Where the auditor raises a point, we provide the legal and factual context so it can be resolved during the audit rather than escalating.

03Challenging a decision

Reconsideration is your first and often best opportunity to correct an unfair outcome. A strong request explains what happened, why the decision is wrong and what evidence supports your position.

We draft these requests carefully, track every deadline and, if needed, prepare the case file for the Tax Disputes Resolution Committee.

  1. 1

    Assess

We review the notice, decision or penalty and the deadline.

  2. 2

    Prepare

We gather records and build the audit or appeal file.

  3. 3

    Respond

We submit responses or the reconsideration request.

  4. 4

    Resolve

We follow through to a decision and fix root causes.

The FTA normally sends a notice before an audit, setting out the scope and the documents required. Some reviews are carried out remotely through information requests.
